Idiot proof advice please

Going to Lanzarote for 29 days what is the best way for me to keep in touch with home (UK).I have just been given my first mobile phone I'm 76 years young, so please give nice and simple instructions if you can help, phone is a Nokia 2027 model,thank you all in anticipation Cheers Ann
