USA Sim Card

My Son is travelling around America for approx. 2 months , he has a Orange contract phone which he has just cancelled. What is the best solution for him using his phone in the US - should he buy a US Sim card from the UK before he travels ? - he travels this Friday morning so need to sort it quickly before he goes. Any comments would be appreciated
